Singita Sabi Sand: Africa’s Most Celebrated Safari Lodge

by | Jun 4, 2026 | Lodge

Singita Sabi Sand is the benchmark against which all other African safari lodges are measured. Comprising two properties — Boulders Lodge and Ebony Lodge — on a 33,000-acre private concession within Sabi Sands Game Reserve, Singita has held more world’s best lodge awards than any other safari property on Earth. It represents what happens when extraordinary wildlife access is combined with six-star hospitality, exceptional cuisine, and a design sensibility that sets the standard for the entire luxury travel industry.

Singita means “place of miracles” in Tsonga. The name is not an exaggeration.

The Singita Concession: Why It Matters

Singita’s 33,000-acre concession is the most important distinguishing feature of its Sabi Sands operation. Unlike most Sabi Sands lodges that share game drive areas with neighbouring properties, Singita’s vehicles operate exclusively within their own concession. When a leopard is found, no other lodge’s vehicles can attend the sighting. The experience is entirely private.

This exclusivity extends across the reserve. Singita guests encounter leopard, lion, and all other wildlife in sightings shared only with one or two other Singita vehicles — and often entirely alone. In a reserve known for world-class wildlife, Singita delivers that wildlife in conditions no competitor can match.

Boulders Lodge

Boulders Lodge is the more intimate of Singita’s two Sabi Sand properties — eight suites built amongst the granite boulders that give the lodge its name. The architecture is extraordinary: raw stone walls, glass panels that dissolve the boundary between interior and bush, and a design language that feels like the landscape has been folded around the accommodation rather than the accommodation inserted into the landscape.

Each suite has a plunge pool, outdoor shower, and fully stocked mini-bar. The main lodge building has a library, wine cellar (Singita’s wine programme is one of the finest in Africa), and a viewing deck overlooking a waterhole that attracts elephant and lion year-round.

With only 16 guests at maximum capacity, Boulders operates with an intimacy that is rare in any category of hospitality. The ratio of staff to guests is extraordinary — every detail is anticipated rather than requested.

Suites: 8 (including a Family Suite for guests with children 10+)

Style: Organic, stone-and-glass architecture integrated into granite formations

Best for: Couples, small groups, design-conscious travellers who want the most intimate Singita experience

Ebony Lodge

Singita Ebony Lodge is larger than Boulders — twelve suites — and more social in atmosphere. Ebony was Singita’s first lodge in Sabi Sands, opening in 1993, and its design reflects a classic colonial grandeur updated with Singita’s characteristic restraint and quality.

The main lodge includes a gallery featuring rotating exhibitions of African art, an award-winning wine cellar, and a series of outdoor spaces — boma, pool deck, and viewing deck — that flow naturally from one to another. Ebony’s kitchen is one of the finest on the bush, producing food that competes with the best urban restaurants.

The 12-suite scale creates a more communal atmosphere than Boulders — guests share sightings stories over dinner, compare notes on the morning’s leopard encounter, and benefit from the energy of a slightly larger group.

Suites: 12

Style: Classic luxury with contemporary African art; more social than Boulders

Best for: First-time Singita guests; those who want a balance of intimacy and social atmosphere

Game Viewing at Singita Sabi Sand

Singita’s 33,000-acre exclusive concession is ecologically diverse — a mix of riverine forest, open savannah, mopane woodland, and grassland that supports the full spectrum of Sabi Sands wildlife.

Leopard: Singita delivers some of the best leopard sightings in Sabi Sands — and in Sabi Sands that means the best in Africa. The exclusive concession means encounters are completely uninterrupted by other vehicles. Multiple resident leopard families have been habituated for generations. Sightings are frequent, close, and unhurried.

Lion: Several established prides hold territory within or adjacent to the concession. Lion sightings are reliable across a 3-night stay.

Elephant: Regular visitors to the concession’s waterholes and riverine areas. Bull elephants and occasionally breeding herds are encountered.

Cheetah, Wild Dog, and Rhino: All present in the Sabi Sands ecosystem and encountered with varying frequency.

The tracker-guide teams at Singita are among the most experienced in Africa — selected not just for technical competence but for the ability to communicate the bush in a way that transforms observation into genuine understanding.

Singita’s Defining Extras

The wine programme: Singita’s wine list represents one of the finest collections in Africa, with an emphasis on South African wines from boutique producers. The wine cellar at both lodges is a destination in its own right. Sommeliers work alongside the kitchen team; wine dinners in the boma under the stars are a Singita signature.

The gallery: Ebony Lodge’s gallery features rotating exhibitions from African artists, supporting and promoting contemporary African art and artists. Purchases are available.

The spa: A full treatment menu using high-quality products, integrated into the lodge experience. Not an afterthought — a genuine complement to the bush experience.

The cuisine: Singita’s kitchen team produces food that competes with serious restaurants. Meals are not “camp food” — they are sophisticated, creative, and exceptionally executed. Three meals per day are included; bush breakfasts, boma dinners, and in-suite dining are all available.

Singita Across Africa

Singita operates lodges in six African countries: South Africa (Sabi Sand, Kruger), Tanzania (Grumeti), Zimbabwe (Bumi Hills), Rwanda (Volcanoes NP — gorilla trekking), Mozambique (Zinave), and Zambia. A multi-destination Singita itinerary — combining Sabi Sands with the Serengeti or Rwanda — represents one of the finest extended African travel experiences available.

Frequently Asked Questions — Singita Sabi Sand

Is Singita the best safari lodge in the world?

Singita consistently ranks first or second in global luxury travel rankings — alongside Londolozi and a handful of other properties. Whether it is objectively “the best” is a matter of preference; there is no universally agreed metric for such a comparison. What is objectively true: no other safari lodge has won more global best-lodge awards, and no other property consistently delivers the combination of exclusive wildlife access, six-star accommodation, and food and wine quality that Singita offers.

What is the difference between Boulders and Ebony at Singita Sabi Sand?

Boulders (8 suites) is more intimate, architecturally dramatic, and set into rock formations. Ebony (12 suites) is slightly larger, more social, and has the gallery and a slightly more classical design aesthetic. Both share the same exclusive concession and the same guiding team. The choice is primarily one of atmosphere: ultimate intimacy at Boulders vs. a warmer communal experience at Ebony.

How much does Singita Sabi Sand cost?

Singita Sabi Sand rates typically range from USD 1,800–3,500+ per person per night fully inclusive, depending on season, suite type, and lodge. This is the highest price tier in Sabi Sands. The rate covers all accommodation, meals, game drives, and standard beverages. Premium wine, spa treatments, and private activities are charged separately.

How far in advance should I book Singita?

12–18 months for peak season (June–October). Singita’s small capacity and global demand mean availability disappears quickly at desirable dates. Shoulder season (November–May) offers more flexibility but still benefits from 6+ months advance planning. African Safari Group can advise on real-time availability and alternative dates.

Can children stay at Singita Sabi Sand?

Children aged 10 and above are welcome at Boulders Lodge’s Family Suite on shared game drives. Younger children can be accommodated on a private vehicle (additional charge). Ebony Lodge typically has a minimum age of 10 for shared game drives. Singita is not a family-first lodge — families with young children are better served by Londolozi Founders Camp or Sabi Sabi Little Bush Camp.

African Safari Group can confirm current Singita availability across both Sabi Sand lodges and advise on how to combine Singita with other properties or destinations. Enquire here.
