Londolozi Varty Camp — The Original Sabi Sands Safari Experience

by | Jun 11, 2026 | Lodge

What Is Londolozi Varty Camp?

Londolozi Varty Camp is the original camp at Londolozi Private Game Reserve — the historic heart of one of Africa’s most storied safari destinations in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve. Named after the Varty family who have owned and run Londolozi since 1926, Varty Camp is where the concept of the modern luxury private safari was born, and where the Sabi Sands’ legendary habituated leopard programme was first developed.

Londolozi — a Zulu word meaning “protector of all living things” — pioneered the approach that conservation and luxury tourism are not just compatible but mutually reinforcing. The practices developed here over decades influenced game lodges across Africa and fundamentally shaped how the world thinks about safari travel.

Where Is Londolozi Varty Camp?

Londolozi Varty Camp sits on the banks of the Sand River in the northern sector of the Sabi Sands Game Reserve, adjacent to MalaMala to the south and the Kruger National Park boundary to the east.

Access:

  • Skukuza Airport: approximately 30 minutes by road — the closest major camp to Skukuza in the entire Sabi Sands; scheduled Airlink flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town
  • Charter flights to Londolozi’s private airstrip
  • From Johannesburg by road: 5–5.5 hours

What Is Londolozi Varty Camp Like?

Varty Camp has 7 suites and a suite/cottage option — a more intimate scale than some Londolozi properties, retaining the original camp’s bush character while delivering contemporary comforts. The camp is built into the treeline above the Sand River, with decks overlooking the waterway where elephant, leopard, and lion regularly appear.

Each suite has en-suite bathroom, outdoor shower, air conditioning, private deck, and access to the camp’s main areas including pool, boma, and the famous Varty family’s curated conservation library. The atmosphere is warm, intellectual, and deeply personal — Londolozi’s family ethos is felt throughout.

What Wildlife Can You See at Londolozi?

Londolozi’s leopard programme is legendary. The reserve’s rangers have tracked individual leopard and their offspring across generations — some of today’s habituated animals are the great-grandchildren of leopard first filmed here in the 1970s and 80s.

  • Leopard — outstanding; Londolozi ranks alongside Singita and MalaMala as the Sabi Sands’ premier leopard experience
  • Lion — multiple Sand River prides; cubs frequently encountered
  • Elephant, white rhino, buffalo — all present and regularly seen
  • Wild dog — seasonal; northern Sabi Sands traverse

The Londolozi Camp Collection

Londolozi operates five camps within its private concession — each with a distinct character:

  • Varty Camp — the original; 7 suites; classic Londolozi atmosphere
  • Founders Camp — the most luxurious; 10 suites; recently renovated to top-tier standards
  • Pioneer Camp — intimate 4-suite exclusive-use option
  • Tree Camp — 6 elevated suites in the tree canopy; romantic and secluded
  • Private Granite Suites — 3 standalone ultra-private suites above the river

How Much Does Londolozi Varty Camp Cost?

Londolozi Varty Camp is a premium Sabi Sands lodge — below Singita pricing but firmly in the upper tier. Approximate all-inclusive rates per person sharing:

  • Low/green season: from USD 1,100–1,500 per person per night
  • Peak season (June–September): from USD 1,800–2,500+ per person per night
